I must confess you will be able to obtain directly or at second hand the testimony of every guest at the Governor's table, on the night in question to the Land effect. In two cases where direct testimony was impracticable, I can to a certain extent supply the deficiency. The late Governor (in discussing this question) stated to me his conviction that he himself held the charge against you to be unfounded, and that the Chief Justice entertained the same opinion and lamented that Mr. Sulley should have mistaken mere hilarity for drunkenness.
Acting your pardon for being obliged to use such a word in connexion with your name.
I am, my dear Sir,
with profound respect your faithful servant,
